Used for thousands of years in China, acupressure applies the same principles as acupuncture to promote relaxation and wellness and to treat disease. Sometimes called pressure acupuncture, acupressure is often thought of as simply acupuncture without the needles. But what exactly is acupressure and how does it work?

It uses traditional Asian techniques and treatment strategies for the purpose of treating the human body, emotions, mind, energy field and spirit for the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health. Zen Shiatsu is characterized by the theory of Kyo-Jitsu, its physical and psychological manifestations, and its application to abdominal Hara diagnosis. Zen Shiatsu theory is based on an extended meridian system that includes, as well as expands, the location of the traditional acupuncture meridians.
Like Shiatsu, Tui Na uses rhythmic compression along energy channels of the body, as well as a variety of techniques that manipulate and lubricate the joints. Like acupressure, Tui Na directly affects the flow of energy by holding and pressing the body at acupressure points. To a Westerner, Tui Na is the form of Asian bodywork most closely resembling conventional western massage.
Tui na is a hands-on body treatment that uses Chinese taoist principles in an effort to bring the eight principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine TCM into balance. The practitioner may brush, knead, roll, press, and rub the areas between each of the joints, known as the eight gates, to attempt to open the body's defensive chi Wei Qi and get the energy moving in the meridians and the muscles. The name comes from two of the actions: tui means "to push" and na means "to lift and squeeze.
Tuina or tui-na pronounced twee-nah massage originated in ancient China and is believed to be the oldest system of bodywork. Tuina massage stimulates the flow of qi to promote balance and harmony within the body using many of the same principles of acupuncture. Tuina massage is often used in combination with acupuncture.
