Evaluation and Progress report in High School

The evaluation and measurement of the students´ progress is considered to be part of the learning process. The students have the opportunity to reflect about their achievements and set new goals for themselves in what refers to their school performance. The main purpose is that the students develop a desire for improvement and success.

Part of the School´s philosophy is to awaken in the students a continuous interest in learning and a spirit of learning with joy. Therefore, at the beginning and end of each academic period or Quarter the teachers take the time to hold a conversation with each student in an individual basis to talk about his/her achievements and purposes for the following academic term.

The School finds this process to be a formative one since it contributes to each student´s development of his/her personality. Of course, the quality of the relation between the teachers and the students is very important in order to obtain success out of this process. Then, the teachers at Saint Dominic School are encouraged to make a personal effort in the establishment of good, comfortable, and respectful relations with the students, whereas in group or individually.

Grades in the Report Cards are presented in a letter-scale. These in turn are associated to a range of number-grades. Grades represent the work done by the student in Classwork, Quizzes, Tests, Projects, Presentations, Homework and Notebooks.

The Grading scale used in High School is the following:

A + (Number grades from 95 to 100)
A - (Number grades from 90 to 94)
B+ (Number grades from 85 to 89)
B- (Number grades from 80 to 84)
C+ (Number grades from 75 to 79)
C- (Number grades from 70 to 74)
D+ (Number grades from 65 to 69)
D- (Number grades from 60 to 64)

N (Needs Much Improvement, Number grades below 60)

Passing Grade is 60.

A Conduct Grade is presented as an indication of the social development and general behavior of the student during classes and all school activities. This grade is also given in letters. It reflects the student’s appropriation of the norms stated in the School’s Basic Code of Discipline.

In High School, the students receive a Conduct grade for each subject, which is based on different aspects of the student's behavior during each class. Besides, the students recive a General conduct grade, which is given by the Homeroom teacher of each grade.

Promotion to the next graded level is attained by the students when the Final Grade is a passing grade. The Final Grade is the average of the grades obtained in the two Semesters of the school year. Each semester is made up of two Quarters and each semester grade is the average grade obtained in the two Quarters.

According to the Evaluation Regulation of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Nicaragua (MECD), the First and Second Grade students have the right to be promoted to the next grade automatically in case of failing a subject. For Third Grade and above, the students who fail up to two subjects have the right to do extraordinary make-up exams during vacation in order to be promoted to next grade. Students who fail three or more subjects cannot be promoted to next grade.

Report Cards are given to the parents at the end of each Quarter by means of an individual conference with the teacher, except for the last Quarter, when report cards are given to parents in the Office.

The School has settled two types of conditioning status for students who would benefit from a close follow-up in relation to his/her academic performance and personal development in the next school year. These are:

- On Close Supervision. It is close follow-up given to a student during the First Quarter with the purpose of motivating him/her to make a good effort to improve in his/her weaknesses. If the student does not demonstrate improvement, then he/she is given the On Probation status for Second Quarter. In case, the student still does not demonstrate the expected improvement, he/she cannot continue in the School in Second Semester.

- On Probation. It is close follow-up given to a student during the First Quarter, during which he/she needs to demonstrate significant improvement; otherwise, he/she cannot continue in the School in Second Quarter.
